Review of February 15, 2010

Regular Board Meeting


Rusty Miller, board president, called the regular meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., held in room 602 at Miami East Junior High School. The country was honored by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll Call was taken with board members Kevin Accurso, Brad Burton, Gayle Carson, Mark Davis, and Rusty Miller in attendance.

Also in attendance were: Jenny Hodge, parent; and Melanie Yingst, Troy Daily Newspaper.





Jenny Hodge, parent, addressed the Board of Education requesting that her property located within the Bethel Local School District be moved into the Miami East School District.  Mrs. Hodge explained that her children are currently open-enrolled into the Miami East School District and she has been very pleased with the programs and education they have received this year.  Mrs. Hodge further explained that she has already made a similar request to the Bethel School Board. 
            Mr. Miller stated while the Board of Education appreciates Mrs. Hodge’s efforts they could not initiate the process of property redistricting.  Dr. Rappold thanked Mrs. Hodge for attending and commented that the family and children have had success while at Miami East.  Dr. Rappold reiterated comments made by Mr. Miller and explained that the district did not wish to compete for neighboring property in other neighboring districts.






                 -      The Miami East Education Foundation (MEEF) would like to remind every 
                        student, staff member, parent, and resident of the upcoming VikingFest that will
                        be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010.
Examples of these events/activities include:


·         Fletcher United Methodist church chicken and noodles, serving begins at 11:30

·         a chili cook-off

·         a cake/pie bake-off

·         silent auction and local booths for shopping (Foundation spring bulbs, Miami  

             East alumni Cat's Meow buildings, other unique items)

·         student art show

·         children’s games (old “School carnival”)

A.                 Approval of the minutes of the January 11, 2010 special (re-organizational)

board meeting, as presented by the treasurer. 


B.                 Approval of the financial statements for January, 2010. 


C.         OTHER:

     -      School District Income Tax Receipts Update.  Mr. Sommer shared recent income tax
             receipts received by the district.

            A.        EMPLOYMENT ITEMS:


1.     Approval of Teresa Buchanan, as an AARA Intervention Tutor, for

        elementary and junior high students, at the approved tutor rate of pay, on

        an as needed basis for the 2009-10 school year only, submitted per time sheet

        on a weekly basis, beginning February 1, 2010.



                           2.     Approval of Amy Middleton, as an AARA Intervention Tutor, for

        elementary and junior high students, at the approved tutor rate of pay, on

        an as needed basis for the 2009-10 school year only, submitted per time sheet

        on a weekly basis, beginning February 1, 2010.


 3.     Approval of the following supplemental contract for the 2009-10 school


                        HIGH SCHOOL

                                                Assistant Boys’ Baseball Coach – Nick Kirk – Step 0


 4.     Approval of the following certificated personnel for upgrade of degrees,

         effective February 1, 2010 for the balance of the 2009-2010 school  

         year, on the approved salary schedules:


            1)   Katherine Hartley – MS to MS +15 – Step 9

          2)   Suzanne Weber – ME+15 to ME+30 – Step 15


 5.      Approval of an additional classified sub for the 2009-10 school year,

          on an as needed basis, for the following classifications:

                                           Scott Sharits – Custodian and Bus Driver, Effective 2/1/10



       6.     Approval of an unpaid leave of absence for Diane Littlejohn

  (February 11, 2010) for a total of one day.


       7.      Approval of sub teachers who have been approved by the Miami County
                           Educational Service Center and on file in the central office.  These are
                           all on an as needed basis for the 2009-10 school year.  The board-approved rate 
                           of pay has been set at $75.00 per day through 10th consecutive day and $83.00 
                           per day from 11th day through 60 consecutive day, then place on beginning
                           salary schedule.




Approval of Miami East High School’s request to allow Freshmen,        Juniors and Seniors to arrive two hours late during the administration of the ACT and Ohio Graduation Test during the week of March 15-19, 2010. 




Approval for Miami East Local School District Board of Education to request a
delay of implementing all-day, everyday kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year for
good cause, namely for funding and staffing.

                  -     Dr. Rappold shared this month’s edition of  The Board – “What to Consider When facing
                          A Precedent-Setting Decision”


     -      Board members discussed their annual Board of Education Self-Appraisal.


-      Board of Education annual tour of the campus and classrooms.  Board members requested
that Dr. Rappold select several possible dates during the month of May to consider for the
tour of the campus, construction site, and classrooms.


-            Dr. Rappold reminded everyone of the Miami East Education Foundation’s annual VikingFest
– which will be held on Saturday, February 20 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

-            In addition, Dr. Rappold invited everyone to attend Miami East’s 6th Annual Staff
Appreciation Night – Saturday, February 20, 2010.

-            Update of the high school construction project.  The geothermal project has commenced this
past week.  The first section of the geothermal field is being installed directly in front of the
existing high school. 

Bids were accepted for general construction of the new high school.  The two apparent low bids
for each of the portions of construction are currently being interviewed by the construction
managers and architects.  Dr. Rappold shared that a special Board meeting may need to be held
the first week in March to approve the general contractors for the project.





                        -           General Discussion(s).  Mr. Accurso shared that he has received several phone calls
                                                regarding transportation of the baseball and softball teams this spring.  Mr. Donaldson
                                                is making plans to set-up transportation of these teams.
