Review of January 11, 2010

Re-Organizational/Regular Board Meeting

 

Rusty Miller, board president, called the Re-Organizational meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., held in room 602 at Miami East Junior High School. The country was honored by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll Call was taken with board members Kevin Accurso, Brad Burton, Gayle Carson, Mark Davis, and Rusty Miller in attendance.

Also in attendance were: LaDonna Mays, staff member; Jodi Metzger, staff member; Wes Welbaum, elementary principal; and Melanie Yingst, Troy Daily Newspaper.

 

                                                           

 

 ADMINISTER OATH OF OFFICE:  Treasurer, Michael Sommer administered the oath of office to the two following new Board members:

GOOD NEWS RECOGNITION:

 

Mrs. LaDonna Mays shared information regarding a grant the special education department received this fall.  Our special education department received news that they had received a grant written by LaDonna Mays.  As a result, the department received ten computers.  Along with the computers the staff will receive training and a one-year free membership to the assistive technology lending library.

 

 

TREASURER’S REPORT:

 

A.           Review Alternative Tax Budget Document.

 

B.           Approval to authorize contractual payments, authorize payments of bills, borrow funds,     
     request advance of taxes and invest funds for 2010.   

 

C.           Approval of “A Resolution declaring that the Board Of Education of  the Miami East  
     Local School District has reviewed the documents and information prepared by the chief  
     fiscal officer of the Miami East Local
School District for submission to the Budget   
     Commission of Miami County, Ohio, in relation to the Alternative Tax Document format
     filing provided under section 5705.281 of the Ohio Revised Code and authorized by said
     commission for the fiscal year 2011, and that said body approves the same”, as prepared
     by legal counsel for the Miami County Budget Commission. 

 

            D.        Approval of the minutes of the regular board meeting of December 28, 2009, as

                        presented by the treasurer. 

 

E.         Approval of the financial statements for December, 2009.

                         1.      Approval of the following supplemental contracts for the 2009-2010

        school year:

          2.       Approval of sub teachers who have been approved by the Miami County
                   Educational Service Center, and on file in the central office. These are all on
                    an as needed basis for the 2009-10 school year.  The board approved rate of
                    pay has been set at $75.00 per day through 10th consecutive days and $83.00
                    per day from 11th day through 60 days in the same position, then placed on
                    beginning salary schedule.

 

 3.      Approval of Christine Perry’s request for unpaid leave on February 11, 2010
          (total 1 day).

 B.        E-RATE TELEPHONE SERVICE:

                             

        Approval of the selection of the following telephone service providers,

                          following the competitive bid process as outlined by the Schools and Libraries

                          Program of the Universal Service Fund, for the 2009-10 school year:

·         Local Telephone Service - Verizon North, Inc.

·         Long Distance - Qwest Communications Corporation

·         Internet Service - Metropolitan Dayton Education Cooperative Association (MDECA)

 

OTHER INFORMATIONAL/DISCUSSION ITEMS:

 

  -      Dr. Rappold shared this month’s edition of The Board- “Six Sins That Can Destroy
         A Board Meeting”

 

  -      Information was distributed regarding an upcoming OSBA Board Leadership Academy
         being held at the Montgomery County Educational Service Center.  The Board Leadership
         Academy will cover topics such as leadership, management, the evidence based model, and
         pending legislation.

 

  -      A thank you letter written to AMVETS was shared with Board members thanking the
         AMVETS for their generous donation of energy efficient light bulbs to the school district. 
         These light bulbs will be used in all three buildings in the district.

 

  -      Miami County Foundation Thelma Ross Dalton Scholarship winners.  The Miami County
         Foundation announced this year’s recipients.  Maria Hartley, represented Miami East in earning
         this honor.  The Miami County Foundation awarded a total of $47,500 in scholarships during this
         presentation.

 

  -      The Miami East 6th Annual Staff Appreciation Night will be held on Saturday, February
         20, 2010.  Senior winter athletes will select the staff member in the district that has had
         the most positive impact on their lives while at Miami East.  In addition, the Melody Men
         will perform the same evening prior to the start of the varsity game.

                    -      Dr. Rappold reminded everyone that the Miami East Alumni Hall of Fame Nomination
                           Applications are due by January 31, 2010.

 

 

 

   -      Dr. Rappold updated Board members of the varsity baseball/softball field project & high school
         construction project.  For the 2009-2010 spring season the varsity softball team will be playing
         all of its home games at Duke Park.  The varsity baseball team will be playing all of its home
          games at Edison.

Miami East Local School Board

                        Proclamation:

WHEREAS, it shall be the mission of the Miami East School District to provide all students with the best possible education; and

WHEREAS, the school board sets the direction for our community’s public schools by envisioning the community’s education future; and

WHEREAS, the school board sets policies and procedures to govern all aspects of school district operation; and

WHEREAS, the school board keeps attention focused on progress toward the school district’s goals and maintains a two-way communications loop with all segments of the community; and

WHEREAS, serving on a school board requires an unselfish devotion of time and service to carry on the mission and business of the school district; and

WHEREAS, the school board must respond on behalf of the community to the educational needs of students; and

WHEREAS, the school board voluntarily accepts the above-mentioned responsibilities;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that January 2010 is recognized as School Board Recognition Month. We encourage all citizens to publicly and privately thank the school board members from all school districts serving this community for their dedicated service to our children.
