������ ����Regular Board Meeting

 

Rusty Miller, board president, called the regular meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., held in room 602 at Miami East Junior High School. The country was honored by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll Call was taken with board members Kevin Accurso, Brad Burton, Gayle Carson, Mark Davis, and Rusty Miller in attendance.

Also in attendance were: Omar Lozano, staff member; Katie Hartley, staff member; Allen Smith, ESC Curriculum Director; Tim Williams, High School Principal; Jodi Metzger, staff member; Kim Plummer, The Quandel Group; and Dennis Schumaker, The Quandel Group.

GOOD NEWS RECOGNITION:

            -           Congratulations to the HS Women's Choir for earning a Superior rating at the

O.M.E.A. State Contest this year!  The Miami East Women's Choir will be among

the listed groups in the Fall OMEA Educators Journal.  Mr. Lozano gave Board members

an update on the district’s vocal program.  The Women’s Choir performed for the Board of Education.

Mr. Lozano described how the Miami East Women’s Choir competed at the O.M.E.A. State  Choir Contest hosted at Tippecanoe High School.  The young women earned a Superior rating in Class C at the event.  “The girls worked very hard to get to this point. I could not ask for a better first year here at Miami East” said Mr. Lozano.  The Women’s Choir was accompanied by Mrs. Melissa Lozano.  Mr. Lozano would like to thank Miami East staff and administrators for their support this year.  Choir members will receive Superior State medals.  The Choir also receives a O.M.E.A. Superior Choir State Plaque that will hang in the high school music room.

             -          Mrs. Katie Hartley gave a report regarding her recent testimony to the United States

                        House of Representatives regarding value-added data.

                       
In mid-April, Mrs. Hartley was asked to be one of only four individuals across the
                        entire country to testify to the United States House of Representatives.  This
                        testimony was part of the United States House of Representatives ongoing
                        reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.   

 

                        Mrs. Hartley described how the Miami East School District has utilized value-added
                        data and how the staff and students have benefited from this daily this data analysis. 
                        Board President, Rusty Miller, congratulated Mrs. Hartley and spoke positively of
                        how the district’s staff has continued to expand the use of value-added data.

 

 -          Report from the District’s Staff Development Committee. The Staff Development

                        Committee is part of the district’s five-year strategic plan.   Mr. Smith described the
                          offerings the district’s staff  has participated in this year.     

 

 

TREASURER’S REPORT:

 

A.                 Approval of the minutes of the regular board meeting of April 19, 2010,

as presented by the treasurer. 

 

 

B.           Approval of financial statements for April, 2010.  

 

 

C.         Review of the revised five-year forecast for 2010-2014 and discussion of the

District’s financial position. 

 

 

             D.       Approval to revise the district’s financial 5-year forecast for 2010-2014

as presented by the treasurer.

 

 

E.                  Approval to advertise for bids for one (1) seventy-two (72) passenger

transit style bus, with a bid opening on June 11, 2010, at 12:00 noon.

 

 

F.                 Approval to purchase liability, property and fleet insurance renewal from the
Ohio School Plan through The Hylant Administrative Services for July 1,
2010 through June 30, 2011 (12 months).

1.      Approval of Danielle Meier, as a Special Education teacher, at Miami

         East Junior High, on a one year limited contract, bachelor degree, Step 1,

         for the 2010-11 school year, pending BCII and FBI background check

   and official transcripts.

 

 

2.         Approval of Terri Downs, as a Kindergarten teacher, at Miami East Elementary,

         on a one year limited contract, bachelor degree, Step 0, for the 2010-2011 school

   year, pending BCII and FBI background check and official  transcripts.

 

 

3.         Approval of a continuing contract to Amanda Riley, beginning with the

   2010-2011 school year, as requested per letter from her to the administration. 

 

 

             4.       Approval of additional sub classified personnel for the 2009-2010 school
                       year as follows:

                         8.       Approval of sub teachers who have been approved by the Miami County

Educational Service Center and on file in the central office.  These are all

on an as needed basis for the 2009-10 school year.  The board- approved

rate of pay has been set at $75.00 per day through 10th consecutive days,

and $83.00 per day from 11th day through 60th day in the same position,

then place on the beginning salary schedule.

 

 

                         9.       Approval of Jeff Smith’s request for unpaid leave on June 9, 2010 (total 1 day).

 

 

            B.       OHSAA MEMBERSHIP FOR 2010-2011:

         Approval of membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association

                       for grades 7-12 for the 2010-2011 school year.

 

 

B.          EARLY RELEASE FOR SENIORS:

                      Approval for 3 days early release days for Seniors on June 1, 2 and 3, 2010.

            Graduation will take place on May 28, 2010.  Dr. Rappold recognized and thanked
            Mr. Williams and the high school staff for coming in and scheduling the make-up
            days for this year’s seniors.

 

 

            D.        APPROVAL OF CLASS OF 2010 FOR GRADUATION:

             

                     Approval of the Class of 2010, which includes 98 seniors, for graduation on

           May 28, 2010, 7:30 p.m., at Hobart Arena in Troy.  

 

 

E.        APPROVAL FOR UPPER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER TO PROVIDE

     ATHLETIC TRAINING SERVICES:

 

Approval of a three-year contract with Upper Valley Medical Center to

provide Athletic Training services from August 1, 2010 through July 31,

2013 at an annual cost of one dollar ($1.00) per year

INFORMATIONAL/DISCUSSION ITEMS:

 

      -         Dr. Rappold shared this month’s edition of The Board – “Five Things You Can
   Do To Retain Teachers”

 

      -         Dr. Rappold shared that this year’s Board of Education self-appraisal will be
                 completed by Dr. Decker during the regularly scheduled meeting in June.

 

      -         Eighth Grade graduation will be held on Monday, June 7, beginning at 7:00 p.m., 
               and in the past a Board Member has attended and spoke to the eighth grade

   graduates.  Mr. Miller volunteered to once again attend the eighth grade graduation
   on behalf of the Board of Education.

        

      -         2009-2010 list of completed evaluations/appraisals for certified, classified, and
   administrators across the district.

 

      -         Thank you letter written on behalf of the school district to the Friends of William
   McCulloch for the generous donation of eighty copies of the book The Longest

   Debate. This book will be used in the high school Government classes. –

  

                  -         Dr. Rappold recognized the success of this year’s spring athletic teams.  The varsity
                             softball and girls’ track teams captured league titles this year.   In addition, for the third
                             consecutive year, the Vikings have been able to bring home the All Sport trophy.
                             Congratulations to all athletes, and thanks to the Miami East community for all your
                             support!
