Five-Year Renewal of Permanent Improvement Levy

Like homeowners with unforeseeable emergencies such as automobile repairs or heating malfunctions, the Miami East Local School District prides itself in maintaining buildings and upgrading equipment both expected and unexpected.

On November 5th The Miami East Local School District Board of Education has placed a permanent improvement renewal levy request on the ballot for maintenance and capital improvements projects.  The levy is to renew the current levy and is not a new or additional tax.

Funds from this zero tax increase renewal levy are earmarked for projects such as upkeep of boilers, floors, plumbing, computer purchases, security equipment, bus purchases, and parking lot resurfaces.  Like any property owner, dollars are needed to maintain facilities and the permanent improvement fund is the district’s set-aside reserve for maintenance expenses.

    Members Attend FFA Camp

The week of June 3, members of the FFA Chapters at Covington and Miami East High Schools attended the first session of Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum, Carrollton, Ohio. There were over 250 campers in attendance with additional State FFA Officers, FFA Camp Staff, and dozens of FFA Advisors from across the state. FFA Camp Muskingum is located on Leesville Lake and is owned and operated by the Ohio FFA Association.

Members attending included: from Miami East-MVCTC FFA Jeffrey Blackford , Carter Gilbert, Grayson Jacobe, Evan Massie, and Rylee Puthoff and from Covington-UVCC FFA was Randy Anthony

The 2019 theme was a “Color Wars”. During the week members also participated in various sports tournaments involving softball, sand volleyball, basketball, ping pong, and corn hole. Additional competitions included reciting of the FFA Camp Creed, rifle, shotgun, and archery, and hide-n-seek challenges. Each morning, before breakfast, campers had the opportunity to plunge into the lake or take a sunrise walk.

During the first day members met fellow members in their camp chapters, learned camp rules, and participated in a dance. The day ended with a campfire reflecting of opportunities at camp.

The second day included team building activities, high ropes for senior members, a night time scavenger hunt and team building workshop by the State FFA Officers. The highlight of the day was a visit from a guest speaker, Mr. Ty Higgins. Mr. Higgins is a former farm broadcaster and now media specialist for the Ohio Farm Bureau. He is the man that created the 10 gallon challenge to promote the dairy industry. The day ended with a campfire challenging campers to work together as a team.

On Wednesday, members rotated through various environmentally-related workshops including creaking, tree identification, recycling, and more. Campers were greeted by The Ohio State University on how to attend OSU in an agriculture degree. Junior and senior campers completed a community service program. The day ended with a campfire challenging campers to take advantage of every opportunity at camp.

Thursday gave campers the opportunity to attend workshops on canoeing and kayaking and line dancing. Some chose to attend workshops on environmental issues. The afternoon included water-related games. Following the speaking finals, members attended a Talent Show in which Evan Massie participated. Members participated in a dance. The evening ended with a slideshow of the week and a life-challenge by the State FFA Officers.

The week ended with a Friday morning cleaning of camp and a send-off by the State FFA Officers.

Highlights of the week were the many friends and challenges that campers overcame. Members enjoyed the experience to meet FFA members from across the state and connect back to nature.

    2019-2020 Student Supply Lists

All elementary and junior high supply lists for 2019 are currently posted on their building's main web pages.

    Kindergarten Students

Attention Incoming Kindergarten Students for the 2019-2020 school year. This is a reminder to parents of incoming Kindergartners you need to have your physical and shot records returned to the elementary office by the first day of school.

    Volunteering

You are always WELCOME to volunteer in the Miami East School District.  Our school programs have been successful over the years because so many parents and friends are willing to share their time and talents with all of us. We can always use your talents to give mini-courses, to help a teacher or a student, to substitute for a lunch/playground monitor, or chaperone a field trip. If you or anyone you know has the time to offer - please call any of the schools in the district.

Volunteers are always welcomed and needed in all three schools in the district.   Parents and community members are encouraged to volunteer and make a difference in a student’s life that will have a lasting effect!

Beginning during the 2018-2019 school year the District utilized a new set of procedures to approve volunteers.  Miami East has contracted with the Background Investigation Bureau (BIB) company.  The BIB has been in existence over 25 years, conducting third party background checks for School Districts and companies across the country.  BIB has developed Secure Volunteer, a web based application, to review applicants who wish to volunteer.  Individuals follow specific instructions, online, for signing releases or authorizations, entering personal information and submitting payment.  All data entry is handled by the volunteer applicant and automatically submitted to BIB for controlled processing.

Contact your building principal and discuss areas you would like to volunteer.  The principal will share the volunteer paper application and forward it onto Dr. Todd Rappold at the Board of Education Office to approve the processing of the applicant’s online application. The District appreciates the time and effort of our volunteers and will cover the cost of the check for our volunteers.

    2019-2020 Immunization Information

Attention all current 6th and 11th graders:

Incoming 7th graders for the 2019-2020 school year are reminded that they must show proof of the following immunization before they may enter school. This coming fall, incoming 7th graders will be required to have documentation of 1 dose of Tdap vaccine. In addition, meningococcal vaccine will also be required for the upcoming school year prior to entry to the 7th grade.

Please check with your family physician if you have any questions. Proof of these immunizations may be delivered to the junior high office any time. This will need to be completed before students may enter school for the 2019-2020 school year. Once again, immunization documentation can be turned in beginning this week, through the summer months.

Also, just a reminder incoming seniors also have to document 2 doses of meningococcal.

    Work Permits
    Steps to Complete:

Go to the Miami East Web Site under “Parent Forms”.  Locate the TWO forms “Work Permit Application for Minors” and “Work Permit Physical Form”.  If the high school office is open these forms can also be picked up in the high school office.

There are 3 sections to a work permit that need completed.

    • The top section of the “Work Permit Application for Minors” is completed and signed by the parent.
    • The second section of the “Work Permit Application for Minors” is filled out and signed by the employer.
    • Lastly, a student must have a physical.  If we have a sports physical on file and it is less than 1 year old, we can use that.
    • Once both forms have been completed contact the high school office to have the work permit processed and submitted to the state.
    • If the forms are being completed during the summer months please contact Superintendent, Dr. Rappold at 335-7505 ext. 1124 to make arrangements to have the office finalize the permit.

    Need an Athletic Physical Form??
Athletic physical forms are available on the Junior High and High School home web sites.
