Miami East Local Schools welcomes opportunities to work with the news media to share stories about our students, staff and schools. We also have a responsibility to protect student privacy and maintain a safe learning environment with minimal disruption to instruction.

The following guidelines apply to media visits and coverage at district buildings and facilities:

• Direct media inquiries to the Miami East Communications Coordinator. Coaches or activity sponsors may respond to routine questions about athletic and extracurricular events, in coordination with the district when needed.

• Contact the Communications Coordinator before visiting a school or district property for an interview, photograph or video recording. Media representatives who arrive without prior arrangements will be directed to the Communications Coordinator.

• Interviews and recording on school property require approval from the Communications Coordinator and the appropriate building administrator. Staff will coordinate the time and location.

• Classroom visits require advance notice to the teacher and approval from the building administrator. Visits must not disrupt instruction.

• Before arranging student interviews or images, district staff will check applicable permissions and privacy restrictions. Student interviews require parent or guardian permission, or the eligible student’s permission when applicable, and will be coordinated by the Communications Coordinator.

• Media access to public events may differ from access during the school day. District staff can help reporters determine what permissions apply to a specific assignment.

Student photographs and recordings can involve different privacy considerations depending on the setting, how the image is used and whether it is part of an education record. District staff should follow Miami East’s current student permissions and directory information procedures when coordinating coverage.
