Young Leaders Take on Hunger in First Student United Way Session

Empowering students to turn compassion into action.

MIAMI COUNTY, OH — The 2025 Student United Way program officially kicked off with an inspiring first session centered around Food Insecurity — one of Miami County’s most pressing community needs.

Eight students from Piqua, Troy, Miami East, and Milton-Union High Schools came together at the United Way of Miami County office to learn how local organizations are working to ensure no one goes hungry.

Throughout the day, students heard directly from four partner agencies — Salvation Army, The New Path, First Place Food Pantry, and We Love Birthday Parties — each of which provides critical food and community assistance to local families.

“The students were deeply engaged from the moment they walked in,” said Sean Ford, CEO of the United Way of Miami County. “They asked thoughtful questions, shared meaningful ideas, and truly saw how compassion and leadership can come together to change lives.”

The session concluded with a hands-on service activity, as students assembled colorful birthday bags for We Love Birthday Parties, a nonprofit that ensures every child — regardless of circumstance — gets to celebrate their special day.

“Watching the students pack these birthday bags with smiles and care was powerful,” Ford added. “They weren’t just learning about service — they were living it.”

The Student United Way program is more than just a leadership initiative — it’s a movement to ignite empathy, compassion, and purpose in the next generation. Each session invites students to step into the stories of their community, connect with local nonprofits, and see firsthand how their time and talents can make a lasting impact.

Through experiences like these, students are discovering what it truly means to serve with heart and lead with hope. They’re not only shaping their own futures — they’re shaping the future of Miami County.

Future sessions will explore additional focus areas, including mental health, housing stability, and youth development.
