Important Changes to Ohio Attendance Laws
Miami East Families,
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Ohio has changed its state attendance requirements. These changes place a greater emphasis on regular attendance, early intervention, and communication between schools and families when attendance concerns arise.
One of the most important changes for families to understand is that ALL absences, excused, medically excused, and unexcused, count toward a student's total missed instructional hours when determining chronic absenteeism.
What Families Should Know
• Earlier Family Notification
Families will receive notification when a student has missed 5% or more of the school year for any reason. This includes excused, medically excused, and unexcused absences.
• Chronic Absenteeism
A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school year for any reason, approximately 90–100 instructional hours, depending on the school calendar.
• All missed time counts
Full-day absences, late arrivals, and early dismissals all contribute to a student's total missed instructional hours. This includes absences with or without medical documentation.
• Early Intervention & Support
When attendance concerns arise, Miami East may work with families to identify barriers that are affecting attendance and connect students and families with appropriate support. These may include transportation, medical, or other concerns.
• Excused vs. Unexcused Absences
Although all absences count toward chronic absenteeism, documentation still matters. Ohio's habitual truancy requirements are based specifically on unexcused hours.
A student may be considered habitually truant after:
● 30 consecutive hours without a valid excuse
● 42 hours within one month without a valid excuse
● 72 hours within one school year without a valid excuse
Please refer to the student handbook for information regarding valid excuses and required documentation.
• Attendance Intervention & Follow-Up
When attendance concerns arise, schools may work alongside families to develop appropriate interventions and identify ways to improve attendance. If attendance concerns continue, additional steps may be required under Ohio law, including possible referrals to outside agencies.
• Driver's Education Requirements
High school families should also be aware that students must meet Ohio's attendance requirements before participating in the in-car portion of driver's education.
• We're Here to Help
We understand there are many legitimate reasons a student may need to miss school. The purpose of these changes is to identify attendance concerns earlier and provide support before missed instructional time becomes a larger issue.
If your family is experiencing challenges that make regular attendance difficult, please reach out to your child's school. Our goal is to work with you—not simply notify you—to help your student stay connected, supported, and learning.

Homecoming Parade and Homecoming Event Information:
Miami East Local Schools will hold the 2026 Homecoming Parade on Wednesday, October 7 at 6:30 PM followed by the powder puff game at the stadium.
The Miami East community is invited to this event. We ask that you park in the back lots of the BOE building, MEHS or the K-8 building. Spectators can view the parade from any sidewalk in front or in back of MEHS or the K-8 building.
If dropping off a parade participant, please do so either entering campus from 589 between the BOE building and MEHS or by entering campus from Troy-Urbana Road BEHIND the BOE building and have your student walk to the front BOE parking lot. Only parade vehicles will be permitted in the front parking lot of the BOE building.
The parade route is outlined with the blue arrows. At 6:25 PM, the front entrances to the Miami East campus will be closed and all vehicles entering campus should use the south entrance off of Troy-Urbana behind the BOE building.
Please come out and support our 2026 Homecoming Court, JH & HS fall athletic teams, student organizations and marching band. The Junior vs Senior Class Powder Puff Game will be played at Viking Stadium 30 minutes after the conclusion of the parade.

Calling all Miami East 7th and 8th grade girls! Curious about wrestling? Come learn about the Miami East Girls Wrestling Program at a student meeting on October 7 at 11:25 a.m. in the gym. Coaches Matt Bone and Abby Bowers will be there to answer your questions. Mr. Unger will call students to the gym over the announcements.
No experience is needed! If you want to give it a try, open mats begin Tuesday, October 13, from 5:30–6:45 p.m. in the wrestling room at the Board Office building and continue every Tuesday.

Join us for the Miami East Father–Daughter Dance on Sunday, October 11, from 5–7 p.m. in the Miami East High School gym. Get ready for an evening of dancing and special memories together!
Admission is $10 per adult and $5 per daughter, cash only. Photos will be available for $5.

Miami East Youth Wrestling Registration is OPEN!
Calling all future Vikings! Registration for Miami East Youth Wrestling is now open for students in kindergarten through 6th grade who live in the Miami East School District.
Online registration is open September 10–October 15, and an in-person registration opportunity will be held Saturday, October 3, from 9:00–10:30 a.m. in the Elementary Cafeteria.
Registration is $105 and payment is due in full at registration. Parents should also bring a copy of their child’s birth certificate, which is required to obtain a USA Wrestling card.

The Miami East Basketball Program is getting ready for another exciting season! Boys in grades 2–6 will have multiple opportunities to learn the game, build their skills, compete, and have some fun on the court.
Opportunities include the Youth Skills League for grades 2–6 and Grade-Level Select Teams for students looking for a more competitive experience.
